About Fordite:
Fordite is a by-product of the now obsolete
painting process used in the automotive
industry from the 30’s up until the 70’s.
Layers upon layers of oversprayed
paint built up on the walls of the painting
booths in the Ford, Chevy and other large
auto manufacturing factories. Over time the
layers became too thick and needed to be
removed. Observant and artistic employees
luckily realized the beauty of
what they were removing from the assembly
line. They brought this salvaged treasure to
talented lapidary artists who then brought
the “stone” to life. Fordite represents years
of automotive history in every small piece.
Unfortunately modern painting technology
has eliminated the possibility of growing
further paint layer buildup so this material is
limited in quantities. |
